The Virtual Ukraine Institute for Advanced Study (VUIAS) is a project of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin e.V. – Institute for Advanced Study Berlin, Wallotstraße 19, 14193 Berlin. The VUIAS operates the Website, which is accessible under https://www.vuias.org and its subdomains (the “Site”). In this privacy policy, we wish to inform you about any processing of personal data when you browse on or use the features and functions of our Site. Which data are collected and for what purpose?

Avoiding and solving technical problems

When you visit our Site, your browser automatically sends information to the VUIAS’ web server. This information is saved in a log file, stored there for a period of 2 months, and then deleted. We process this information to ensure a steady and reliable connection between you and our Site and to solve any technical problems. The data involved are:

  • Your IP address
  • Date and time of the visit
  • Kind and version of the browser
  • Operating system
  • URL of the websites visited earlier, if they are linked to us
  • Requested domain/resource
  • Domain name of the requesting Internet service provider
  • Report of successful data access
  • Search term if a search machine is used

The aforementioned purposes also constitute the legitimate interests we pursue with processing the data (Art. 6 par. 1 lit. f) GDPR.

Contact by email

Purposes: You can contact us via the email address found on our website. If you notify us at the address contact@vuias.org, we will also process your personal data. In the course of this communication process, we process at least your email address and all information that you transmit to us with your message. The processing of your personal data when sending an email to the specified address takes place exclusively to answer your request.

Legal basis: The legal basis for this is Art. 6 (1) f) GDPR. Our legitimate interest lies in the aforementioned purpose.

Storage period: We delete the data processed for this purpose immediately after termination of the communication with you.

Profiles in social networks (social media)

The VUIAS runs profiles on social networks. Our social media accounts complement our website and offer an easy way to interact with us. Once you access our social media profiles on the social networks, the terms and conditions and data processing policies of the respective operators apply. The data collected about you when using the services is processed by the networks and may also be transferred to countries outside the European Union where there is no adequate level of protection for the processing of personal data. We have no influence on the data processing in the social networks, since we – like you – are users of the network. Joint Control

Purposes: we process personal data as our own data controller when you send us requests via the social media profiles. We process this data to respond to your requests. In addition, we are joint controllers with the following networks and for the following processing operations (Art. 26 DSGVO). In the course of visiting our profile on the Facebook network, the network collects aggregated statistics (“Insights Data”) created from certain events logged by their servers when you interact with our profiles and related content. We receive these aggregated and anonymous statistics from the network about the use of our profile. We are generally not able to attribute the data to specific users. To a certain extent, we can determine the criteria according to which the network creates these statistics for us. We use these statistics to make our profiles more interesting and informative for you. Storage period: We do not store any personal data ourselves within the scope of joint responsibility. Information that we have received in connection with contact requests via the social media network and process outside the network, we delete immediately after the end of the active communication with you.

To ensure that your data is processed in a secure way during transmission, we use encryption in accordance with the state of the technology, including SSL (Secure Socket Layer). We implement technical and organizational measures to secure our Site and other systems against the loss, destruction, access, alteration, or dissemination of your data by unauthorized persons.
